Mariana Paliu: Leading, Learning and Embracing the Journey
For Mariana Paliu, achievement is not simply about reaching a destination. It is about embracing challenges, learning from every experience and helping others discover what they are capable of.
A Chartered Accountant and MBA-qualified finance executive with more than 20 years of leadership experience, Mariana has worked across mining, engineering, manufacturing and technology. Toastmasters has provided another opportunity to develop her communication and leadership while contributing to the growth of others.
As Area Director for Area C4, Mariana supported five established clubs and newly chartered Carpathian Toastmasters. The results were exceptional: all five established clubs achieved Smedley Distinguished status, while Carpathian Toastmasters reached Select Distinguished just three months after chartering.
This collective achievement earned Area C4 the President’s Distinguished Area Award. For Mariana, the recognition reflected the dedication of club officers, members, mentors and leaders working together throughout the year.
At the District 17 Annual Awards Gala, Mariana was also named District Officer of the Year, recognising her leadership, service and contribution across the District. Her Toastmasters experience has reinforced that leading volunteers requires more than directing—it requires listening, building relationships and creating opportunities for others to step forward.
The evening also celebrated Mariana’s achievement of the Distinguished Toastmaster (DTM), Toastmasters International’s highest recognition in communication and leadership. For her, the DTM represents years of learning, leadership, mentoring and personal growth rather than simply a milestone.
Her advice is simple: step forward, stay with it and keep learning. Challenges may not always be within our control, but we can choose how we respond—and sometimes our greatest contribution is helping someone else discover their potential.
Now serving as Central Division Director, Mariana’s journey continues, with another opportunity to learn, contribute and help others grow.
