How Kaya Toastmasters Helped Shape New Voices
What happens when a Toastmasters workshop gives people the confidence to find their voice? Sometimes, the impact travels much further than the room.
On 24 July, Kaya Toastmasters welcomed international students from Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR), Indonesia, to the Rod Evans Community Centre in Perth for a Micro Speechcraft workshop.
The hands-on session introduced students to public speaking and leadership through spontaneous storytelling and impromptu speaking. They also explored SHEPHe(a)rd, a simple and memorable tool designed to help with posture, presence and clarity—skills they can carry into any room.
For students navigating a new country and language, the experience offered more than speaking practice. It created a supportive space to build confidence, discover their voice and take their first steps towards becoming stronger communicators and leaders.
And then something remarkable happened.
The story travelled beyond Perth. Harian Disway, a respected East Java publication, published an opinion piece written by two of the participating students. Their voices became part of the story, demonstrating how a local Toastmasters initiative can create an impact that reaches an international audience.
The workshop was made possible by Speechcraft Manager Juliana, Club President Karyn, and volunteers Agata, Santi and Sabrina.
Their work is a powerful reminder of what Toastmasters can make possible: one workshop, one voice, one opportunity—and an impact that can travel far beyond the club.
