International Convention Highlights
District 17 Shines at the 2025 Toastmasters International Convention

From August 21–24, the 2025 Toastmasters International Convention brought together members from around the globe in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania—a city steeped in history as the birthplace of the United States. It was here, in Independence Hall, that the Declaration of Independence and U.S. Constitution were debated and signed, laying the foundation for a new nation built on liberty and self-governance.
The District 17 TRIO—District Director Tom Bielski, Program Quality Director Maree Pickens, and Club Growth Director Desmond Miranda—began their journey with two days of intensive District Leader Training, followed by the Convention itself.

Philadelphia in August was warm and humid, with average highs around 84°F (29°C) and occasional summer showers. Despite the heat, the city buzzed with energy as over 1,200 Toastmasters gathered to celebrate excellence in communication and leadership.

A Moment of Glory: Hall of Fame Recognition
Our proudest moment came when District 17 was honoured on stage at the Hall of Fame ceremony as a President’s Distinguished District—the only District in Region 12 (Australia and New Zealand) to achieve Distinguished or better in 2024–2025. The roar of the crowd and the sea of flags waving in celebration made it an unforgettable experience.

A Global Celebration of Diversity and Inclusion
The Parade of Flags was a visual feast, with members from over 100 countries proudly representing their nations—many in traditional dress. The Korean delegation stood out with their stunning hanbok attire. The Convention also exemplified inclusivity, with members of all abilities actively participating in sessions, contests, and celebrations.

Workshops, Wisdom, and On-Demand Learning
The Convention featured a rich array of workshops and education sessions, including:
- Dismantling Burnout – Cait Donovan
- The Story Finder – Ed Tate
- Futureboards Workshop – Sarah Centrella
- Lights, Camera, Impact – Forrest Tuff
- The NET Approach to Public Speaking – Melinda Lee
All sessions are available via Convention On Demand for 60 days, allowing members to revisit or catch up on sessions they missed.
The Road to the World Championship
The World Championship of Public Speaking was the grand finale. After months of competition, 28 semifinalists competed in two rounds, with eight finalists advancing to the final stage. The speeches were powerful, heartfelt, and inspiring. The winner, Sabyasachi Sengupta from District 59 (Amsterdam), captivated the audience with his speech “Just Nod”, a moving reflection on rediscovering his childhood dream of performing—even in the corporate world.
