Habla Hispanic Journey – Becoming Smedley

Habla Hispanic Toastmasters Club began with a simple but powerful vision: “to provide a welcoming space where Spanish‑speaking migrants and anyone interested in Hispanic culture could develop confidence communicating in both English and Spanish”. One year later, that vision has grown into a vibrant community recognised with the Smedley Award.

Habla’s journey started long before chartering. The founding team spent months promoting the idea across Perth’s Hispanic community, organising information sessions, delivering Speechcraft programs, and inviting guests to demonstration meetings. Many migrants were curious but hesitant; some believed their English wasn’t “good enough,” while others had never spoken publicly. Still, a committed group believed the club could make a real difference.

The club chartered with around 25 members – a mix of brand‑new Toastmasters, dual members and reinstated members – marking the creation of a space where people could belong, learn and support each other .

The first year brought challenges familiar to any new club: fluctuating membership, busy schedules and members needing encouragement. Instead of seeing these as setbacks, leaders focused on strengthening culture through engaging meetings, mentoring, participation and inclusivity. Members don’t simply attend meetings; “they celebrate together, encourage one another and genuinely care about each other’s personal growth”.

Achieving the Smedley Award became a defining milestone. For a young club, it demonstrated teamwork, commitment, leadership and a welcoming environment that inspired guests to become members.

Success came from consistent small actions, a clear purpose, and a strong sense of belonging. And that includes some Zumba Demo sessions right before their meetings!
