Rotary Jacaranda Festival – Sunday 24 November 2024, 9.30am – 3.30pm
This year’s Rotary Jacaranda Festival will be held on Sunday 24th November 2024. Applecross Rotary will once again take over a much-loved section of Ardross Street, in the heart of Applecross Village, to deliver a fantastic, family-friendly day of fun and entertainment.

The Rotary Jacaranda Festival is a celebration of all things ‘community’ something that is at the heart of the work Rotary do as a Club throughout the year. Applecross Toastmasters meets very close by and are thrilled to have succeeded in securing a stall given its a very competitive application process.
Over 10,000 people attend the festival in the one day and they come from far and wide, not just locals. Applecross will band with members from nearby clubs to help man the stall such as:
Como Communicators
Sunday Sundowners
Murdoch Southsiders
Fremantle Gateway
Fremantle Gourmet
Melville TM
District will be supporting our promotion of Toastmasters to Festival goers and we will also be promoting Speechcraft and Fremantle Gateway Gavel Club.
There will be close to 150 stalls, a unique line-up of entertainment featuring even more for families and kids, and that buzz of excitement made possible when thousands of people come together. Make plans to come along and even better if you can help at our stall.

And then intermingled in the format there will also be some fun competitions.
A large array of prizes will be up for grabs.

Electric Toasters is poised to be our first new club in WA this year!
Recently, the prospective club, Electric Toasters at Western Power, achieved an epic milestone! They recruited their 20th member and will be formally chartered as a fully-fledged Toastmasters club later in October. They held their first Business Meeting to elect their inaugural club officers and vote on their Club Constitution and addendum. Congratulations to:
President (and founder) – Ava Fakhar
VP Education – Tanya Nassiri
VP Membership – Sharon Bruyns
VP Public Relations – Rebecca Stevanoski
Treasurer – Adnan Rizvi
Secretary – Kate Watkins
Sergeant at Arms – Liam Ward
The business meeting was a critical step towards finalising the paperwork required to be chartered. The charter documents and membership payments have now been submitted to Toastmasters International and they have confirmed acceptance.
Once the club is officially chartered, District 17 will help Electric Toasters celebrate. We hope many of you will join us!
Indonesian Chamber of Commerce Demo Meeting – Tuesday 1 October
An Introduction to Public Speaking Meeting is being held for committee members at ICCWA (Indonesian Chamber of Commerce Western Australia) to introduce them to Toastmasters’ meeting format. Led by Diana Goh, from CPA Toastmasters and Juliana Kelly, from St George’s Toastmasters, this demo meeting will give the ICCWA leadership a better insight into how Toastmasters can improve members communication skills for event communications, hosting, raising funds and sponsorship, and confidence.
The ICCWA is very interested in the concept of building a bi-lingual English and Bahasa Indonesia Toastmasters Club for its members. This prospective new club would be the first of several new clubs we are looking to develop in the District for bi-lingual communities.
ICCWA committee members are mostly individuals with Indonesian heritage, residing in Perth WA, business owners, working full time or student interns. They are bi-lingual in Bahasa Indonesia and English. ICCWA hold events monthly and committee members take on multiple roles that require public speaking, sometimes in front of large audiences. In fact, the next big event for them is a week-long Indonesian Business Week from 4-8 November in Perth. District 17 is planning to exhibit at their Micro-Trade Table event to further raise awareness of Toastmasters and collect expressions of interest for the prospective new club. Check out the Business Week program here https://iccwa.net.au/kaya/

Toasting Human Energy President Jess Gough featured in West Australian Sat 28 Sept
Jess Gough is the much-loved President of Toasting Human Energy at Chevron Australia. Her energy is infectious, her feedback insightful and her leadership is inspiring – all skills she’s honed while running her side hustle as aka “The Sugar Duchess” and Director of Perth International Burlesque Festival!
This year the festival welcomes some 120 acts and perspectives to entertain with a little ‘magic’. Jess showed her performance flair as our MC of the District Humorous Speech Contest final at Downstairs at the Maj at our May 2024 District Conference, Staged for Success. She played an instrumental role in securing the venue for the night and it was a huge success!
Jess scored a front-page photo on the Play insert of Saturdays West Australian – and we couldn’t be prouder! She is making a real difference to the entertainment landscape in WA and we look forward to hearing future speeches about the success of the Festival.
