Sergeant At Arms (SAA)
So, you’re stepping into the role of Sergeant-at-Arms (SAA) at Toastmasters? Awesome! You’re about to become the backbone of the meeting, ensuring everything runs smoothly and everyone feels welcome. Let’s break down what your role looks like, so you can walk in confidently and be ready to own it.
Before the meeting kicks off, keep an eye on the clock. A couple of minutes before the meeting starts, give attendees a friendly reminder that the meeting will start soon. You want people settled without feeling rushed.
Then, touch base with the Toastmaster of the evening. Imagine it like a friendly, “Are you good to go?” This little check-in helps make sure there are no surprises when it’s time to start.
When the meeting begins, it’s your moment to shine! Stand tall at the front of the room and get ready to kick things off. A warm welcome sets the tone, so start with a smile.
Remember “PET” – your go-to for quick announcements:
P: Phones: Remind members and guests to silence their devices. We’ve all been that person who forgets once or twice, right?
E: Emergency Directions. Point out where the exits are, just in case.
T: Toilets. Let them know the location of the nearest restrooms.
Now, it’s time to hand it over to the Toastmaster. Introduce them with some enthusiastic applause. It’s that simple—start the clapping, give them a hearty handshake, and find your seat.
Breaks are for stretching and chatting, but before the break ends, gently remind everyone that it’s time to regroup. A two-minute warning is perfect. We don’t want to interrupt any good conversations!
As the second half begins, it’s your time to rally folks back. Welcome everyone with the same warmth and energy. Once again, introduce the Toastmaster, spark another round of applause, shake hands, and get comfy.
By bringing a friendly vibe to these moments, you’re making sure members and guests feel at ease, ready to participate and learn. Remember, your steps as Sergeant-at-Arms lay the foundation for a successful and engaging meeting. Enjoy the role—you’re a key player in helping everyone shine!
