District 17 Takes on Vancouver: Highlights from the 2026 International Convention

Toastmasters from around the world gathered in Vancouver, Canada, from August 19–22 for four days of learning, leadership, connection and public speaking excellence.

The 2026 Toastmasters International Convention brought members together for inspiring education sessions, practical workshops and valuable networking opportunities.

With more than seven hours of education sessions and over 20 hours of networking, there was plenty to learn, share and take back to clubs.

Learning, Leadership and Inspiration

The Convention featured inspiring speakers who shared practical ideas for communication and leadership.

Psychologist and human connection expert Jody Carrington delivered a keynote on emotional intelligence. She explored how stronger human connections can help us become better leaders.

Meanwhile, Jennifer Moss, workplace culture strategist and award-winning author, received the prestigious Golden Gavel Award. She also presented ideas on creating workplaces where people feel connected, valued and motivated.

The Convention also looked at the future of communication.Senior technology executive Mariam Tariq led a specialized session demonstrating how artificial intelligence tools can be utilized to craft high-impact pitches, streamline club outreach efforts, and attract new members.

Discussions throughout the convention also emphasised how AI functions as an assistive tool for modern speakers—such as using generative platforms for research, outlining, and content ideation—while reinforcing that authentic human connection, emotional intelligence, and personal delivery remain the irreplaceable core of public speaking.

Finally, in his inspiring keynote, “Purpose or Perish: Leading with Meaning,” workplace behaviour expert, Joshua M. Evans, challenged leaders to move beyond operational tasks and reconnect with their core purpose. His presentation provided practical tools for fostering growth, driving member engagement, and creating truly impactful club environments.

The World’s Best Speakers Take the Stage

Of course, public speaking took centre stage during the World Championship of Public Speaking®.

Eight finalists competed for the coveted title after progressing through several rounds of competition.

In the end, Dirceu da Silva of District 59, from Rotterdam, Netherlands, became the 2026 World Champion of Public Speaking with his speech Best Decision Ever!

Gurmeet Singh Gurcharan Singh placed second, while Aaron Samson took third place.

For Toastmasters everywhere, the contest provided more than entertainment. It offered a chance to watch skilled speakers connect with an audience, tell powerful stories and deliver memorable messages.

District 17 in Vancouver

District 17 was represented by its 2026–2027 leadership team: Maree Pickens, DTM, District Director; Desmond Miranda, Program Quality Director; and Souzy Theophilopoulos, Club Growth Director. Tom Bielski, DTM, Immediate Past District Director, received two Awards for District 17 – achieving Smedley Distinguished and the Club Retention Award for retaining 100% of all clubs during 2025-2026. What made it extra special was having several other D17 members in attendance to join the leadership team on stage with International Leaders who have supported us including Toastmasters International President Aletta Rochat DTM, Past International President, Morag Mathieson DTM, International Director Monique Tonna, past Region Advisor and District 17 Coach Kaylene Ledger DTM and current Region 12 Region Advisor Helena Boden-Brewer DTM. Exceptional recognition for exceptional performance!
