Join us for a momentous celebration as District 17 Toastmasters commemorates 100 years of personal development and community spirit! On Sunday, May 4th, at 10:30am, we will gather for a special walk across the iconic Matagarup Bridge.
Where is the Matagarup Bridge?
Matagarup Bridge, a stunning suspension bridge spanning the Swan River, connects Optus Stadium and the Burswood Peninsula to East Perth. It holds deep cultural significance for the Whadjuk people of the Noongar nation as it symbolizes connection and unity. The bridge symbolizes a ‘coming together of diverse cultures,’ with its flowing arches representing a pair of black and white swans or the Wagyl, a water serpent of great importance to local Noongar culture.
What's the significance to Toastmasters?
The Matagarup Bridge is the symbol for our District 17 Toastmasters Newsletter, Maali News. It is named after the Noongar word for 'Black Swan' and each issue showcases our commitment to diversity, inclusivity, and creativity. As we walk across this bridge, we will honor the diverse backgrounds of our members, recognizing people from countries around the world who contribute to our vibrant community.
The Toastmasters program itself serves as a bridge, helping members transition from nervous novices to confident communicators and leaders through practice and supportive feedback. The majestic flowing arches of the bridge could represent the fluency of speech, the rise and fall of our voices, and the path we follow to become better communicators and inspiring leaders.
What's the program for the 'walk'?
This gathering is more than just a walk; it is a celebration of our shared journey of personal growth and development. By walking together, we bridge the gap between cultures and celebrate the strength that comes from our diversity.
The event will feature an Acknowledgement to Country ceremony, paying respect to the traditional custodians of the land, followed by a morning tea and the walk across the bridge as one! A photo shoot will capture these special moments.
After the walk, we will continue the festivities with a lunch at The Camfield (self-pay), where we can share stories, enjoy delicious food, and reflect on our achievements. This is a unique opportunity to connect with fellow Toastmasters, celebrate our milestones, and look forward to the future.
