Kaya! A Bilingual Toast to Courage and Community
How Kaya Toastmasters Was Born: A Bilingual Toast to Courage and Community

It began with a cheeky chat between Agata Dharma, then Vice President of the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce WA (ICCWA), and Diana Goh from Toastmasters District 17. Over coffee and light-hearted banter, a bold idea emerged: Why isn’t there a bilingual Toastmasters club in WA? One that could help Indonesian migrants and business owners grow their public speaking skills in both English and Bahasa Indonesia.
Just like that, the spark was lit.

With full enthusiasm (and a little arm-twisting) from the ICCWA committee and community, the idea was teased during Kaya: Indonesian Business Week, sparking curiosity, excitement, and a flurry of “count me ins!” Maree Pickens, Juliana Kelly, Henry Yau, and Lynette Delane—seasoned Toastmasters legends—jumped in with energy and expertise that made the vision real.
The name Kaya Toastmasters was no accident. It honours Kaya: Indonesian Business Week—ICCWA’s flagship 2024 event celebrating the richness of Indonesian culture and enterprise. “Kaya” means “rich” in Bahasa Indonesia and “hello” in Noongar, perfectly capturing the club’s spirit: inclusive, diverse, and welcoming.
The big debut happened at the Indonesian High Tea: International Women’s Day 2025, hosted by the talented Sienna Rae Prameswari—now VP Education and one of Kaya’s biggest champions. The event’s vibrant energy drew in six new members on the spot, bringing the total to 21 passionate members.

By 31st March 2025, Kaya Toastmasters was officially chartered. More than just a club, Kaya is part of the ICCWA family—rooted in shared values, mutual support, and a spirit of community. ICCWA wasn’t just a supporter; it was a driving force behind Kaya’s creation. That bond continues to shape every gathering, where confidence takes root and community flourishes.

Amazing.
Thanks Sophie!
Go Kaya! 🙂
