Changes for the District

Dear District 17 members,

We are entering a period of time where Resilience, Perseverance and Leadership is vitally important.  The support of our Members and Clubs are a priority.

We are entering unchartered times.  Our State is experiencing many COVID cases currently and this will have an impact on our members and your clubs.

In these times it requires to work together and collaboratively to support our members and clubs.

It may require clubs to consider having hybrid or online meetings.

During this time, it is important to keep in touch with your members.  If you have members not attending meetings keep in touch with them and work with the members to ensure they can continue to meet their goals.

It is also important for the clubs to focus on your goals.  Membership renewal is the focus this month with the membership fees to Toastmasters International due on 31 March 2022.

Remember the Area Directors, Division Directors & District Executive are here to support all clubs.  Please ensure you engage with us so we can support you and your clubs.

From a District level we also need to make changes in how we operate. From 19 March 2022 all Area, Division and District Contests will be conducted online.

We have been faced with these challenges before and we will get through this together.

Open House pays off for Vic Park club!

In a further attempt to bolster membership, on March the 14th Vic Park Toastmasters plans to have its second OPEN NIGHT, since it was dealt an almost fatal blow about June 2020 as a result of shutdowns due to covid 19.

At that time, would you believe, membership went down to about 4 or 5 members. Yet, by hook or by crook we were determined to keep it going using any unconventional method we could think of at the time. Those methods included, asking ex-members to visit for a night just to make up the numbers, letting one person, who said he never wanted to join, just come along, and fill a few roles. But guess what, he actually joined later.

Another thing we did was ask two young sons of a club member whether they could do us a favour and help set up and just do the timing. We also asked help of other senior members that had higher up administrative roles such as the area director, etc. I must admit, that at that time the workload became almost intolerable to the point that the president was prepared to drop everything, but somehow was persuaded to continue.

I think one of the reasons we continued was that Toastmasters is such a wonderful institution, from which we have all benefited so much, that it would be a great pity not to provide such a wonderful service to others. Vic Park Toastmaster was formed by the hard work and effort of some wonderful founding members about 12 years ago and I think some of our motivation was in respect to the effort that they put in to form the club.

So where are we today. Well, we are still fighting, membership has gone up and down and currently we have about twelve active members and hoping for more as a result of our open night.
