winners announced in November!
Toastmasters WA (District 17) is delighted to showcase our three nominees for the 2025 WA Senior of the Year Award. Each has been recognised by their club for outstanding service, leadership, and community impact. From mentoring in prisons, to guiding young people, to building confidence in multicultural communities, these nominees remind us that leadership is not about titles — it is about the impact we make in the lives of others. We are honoured to share their journeys, which highlight the power of dedication, generosity, and lifelong learning.
MEET OUR NOMINEES
At 82, Judith Allen continues to redefine what service, leadership, and generosity look like. For more than four years, she has been a driving force behind Speechcraft courses and Toastmasters clubs in Perth’s men’s and women’s prisons. Each week, she arrives ready to listen, teach, and inspire — offering hope to people society too often forgets.
Judith’s gift is her ability to believe in others before they believe in themselves. She supports nervous speakers taking their first steps, coaches leaders finding their feet, and encourages fellow Toastmasters with her wisdom and insight. Her influence reaches far beyond prison walls, uplifting clubs and individuals across Western Australia.
Her example is a powerful reminder that service has no age limit. Judith embodies the true spirit of community — leading not through accolades, but through tireless, selfless contribution.
For more than 16 years, John Palmer has shaped the lives of countless Toastmasters and young people across WA. A double Distinguished Toastmaster — a
rare achievement in the organisation — John has earned 63 additional awards, served in leadership roles, and helped establish two new clubs.
But perhaps his most lasting legacy is his work with young people. As the inaugural WA Gavel Club Coordinator, John established 11 clubs in schools, creating pathways for students to build confidence and communication skills. His work even led to the Toastmasters program being recognised toward the WACE graduation requirements — a milestone that still benefits students today.
At 84, John remains a steady and inspiring presence in his club, mentoring others with the same passion that has defined his service since 2009. His dedication shows the profound ripple effect one person can have on generations of learners.
Since joining Toastmasters Olaf Schubert has dedicated himself to empowering people whose voices too often go unheard. Through Multicultural Mandurah Toastmasters, Olaf has created a safe space for members — many of whom are older, shy, or have English as a second language — to grow in confidence and find pride in their stories.
Olaf’s approach is gentle yet powerful. He has designed programs that help members step forward, share their experiences, and eventually mentor others. The transformation is visible: once-reserved individuals now stand tall, eager to pass on their wisdom and encouragement.
His work shows that when confidence is nurtured, it can blossom into connection, purpose, and leadership — strengthening both individuals and communities.
