A New Beginning: Multicultural Mandurah Toastmasters Club Sparks Enthusiasm

From the closure of Kwinana Toastmasters has risen a fresh new club — Multicultural Mandurah Toastmasters. Officially launched this year, the club has quickly ignited a spark of enthusiasm among its members, proving that endings often make way for inspiring new beginnings.

Kwinana was formed in 2014 and was heading for deregistration by Toastmasters International when Area director Janice Schubert took on the challenge of rebuilding the club as its coach in late 2024.

Kwinana has been transformed into Multicultural Mandurah Toastmasters. A wonderful mix of members from Australia, Philippines, China, India, Germany, South American, UK providing colour, warmth, fun and vibrant meetings.

Despite being newly formed, the club has attracted members from diverse cultural backgrounds who share one common goal: to improve their public speaking and leadership skills. This diversity has created an atmosphere rich with perspectives, ideas, and experiences.

Club President Sonja describes the meetings as both “welcoming and uplifting,” highlighting the club’s culture of support. “Our members come here not only to learn, but also to connect and grow together. It feels like family — and that’s what makes our club special.”

One feature consistently praised by members is the warm and inclusive environment. Every meeting encourages participation at all levels, from first-time speakers to seasoned members, and fosters confidence through positive feedback.

The club also demonstrated strong leadership in response to its members’ needs. Originally meeting on Friday evenings (fortnightly), members requested a change due to personal and work commitments. The leadership team responded promptly, moving meetings to Monday evenings (fortnightly) — a decision that reflected the club’s values of listening and adapting.

Vice President Education added, “The change shows that our club is member-driven. We want everyone to feel that their voice matters, both in and outside of speeches.”

As Multicultural Mandurah Toastmasters continues to grow, it stands as a shining example of resilience, inclusivity, and community spirit. Out of the ashes of one club, a stronger and more diverse community has emerged — one where learning and growth are celebrated, and where every member has a voice.
